The Khmer temples, five in total, are nestled within a vast Buddhist temple complex. Contrary to the impression given by photographs, these ancient structures are not isolated in a large field, but rather, they are part of a grand square block of religious significance. The complex is accessible from 5:30 to 18:30 through a single entrance, with adequate signage offering insights into the site's historical background.These Khmer-style temples, located in Phetchaburi, are intriguing ruins that offer a serene and crowd-free experience. The site's tranquility is complemented by the unique architectural designs of the buildings, making the journey to this location worthwhile.
Wat Kamphaeng Laeng is believed to be the southernmost extant Khmer temple in Thailand. This site was once the frontier of the Angkor Empire, and today, it houses Angkorian temples. The site features a laterite perimeter wall and several small stone temples in varying conditions. The main temple, although mostly lost, still showcases some attractive stucco. It also houses an Ayutthaya-style Buddha of notable distinction.
The site is an excellent spot for photography enthusiasts. The ancient temples, with their unique charm and historical significance, make for great photo subjects. The site's age and historical importance add a layer of intrigue to every snapshot.
These ruins are not only ancient but also steeped in history. The site is often quiet, with few tourists, offering a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate the ruins in solitude.
The ruins, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, are located in the heart of Phetchaburi. A visit to this Wat, as part of a self-guided walking tour of the town, offers a glimpse into the ancient remains of the Khmer period wall, which stands around 30 feet high. Some parts of the wall contain shrines. This is one of the few places that offer interpretation boards in English. A visit to the grounds can be completed in 10 to 15 minutes. There is an entrance booth, but it was unmanned during the visit, and no entrance fee was required.
The Khmer-style ruins outside Wat Kamphaeng Laeng are interesting to explore. While the site offers great photography opportunities, there is little else to do except walk around. A visit to this part of the site takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Despite the limited activities, the historical significance and the unique architectural designs of the ruins make the visit a memorable experience.
