About Wat Loi Khro
Wat Loi Khro, also known as Wat Loi Kroh, is a Buddhist temple nestled in the heart of Chiang Mai. Despite its modest size, the temple's façade is a marvel of intricate design, adorned with stunning paintings and statues that captivate the eye. The temple's ambiance is one of tranquility, offering a quiet retreat from the bustling city outside its walls.Built 600 years ago during the reign of King Kuna, the 6th monarch of the Mengrai Dynasty, Wat Loi Khro is steeped in history. It stands on Loi Kroh Road, just outside the Chiang Mai Old City Walls. The temple's location is convenient, being only 60 meters away from Loi Kroh Traditional Thai Massage and a mere 600 meters from Wat Buppharam. It is recommended to visit these two temples in a morning, with the second temple being a quick 2-minute motorbike ride away.
Wat Loi Khro's history is as fascinating as its architecture. Originally known as Wat Roikoh or Hoikoh, the temple was deserted and fell into decline when Burma captured and ruled the Lanna Kingdom. However, the Banhom people, a settlement near Chiang Saen, migrated to Loi Kroh and began the process of reconstructing the temple. Today, the temple stands as a testament to their efforts, with statues of various deities adorning the gardens, parking lot, and the fronts of the many buildings on site.
The temple's architecture is a sight to behold. The main assembly hall, or vihara, is built in the Lanna style and is both huge and elegant. The sanctuary houses the Pra-Buddha-Supachok-Saree- Loi Kroa, a Buddha statue made of brick and mortar, lacquered and gilded. The arched entrance is decorated with stucco depicting Lanna incantations, believed to bring good fortune to anyone walking through the entrance. Two lions stand guard in front of the statuary, symbolizing protection and good fortune.
The temple grounds are spotless, with amazing murals and friendly monks adding to the serene atmosphere. While it may not be the first stop for some, it is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The temple is located near the Garden Restaurant and guest house, and is also along the main road near the Le Meriden hotel.
Wat Loi Khro is a beautiful and spiritual temple, a true jewel of Chiang Mai. The architectural details are amazing, and the vibe is peaceful and surreal. The temple grounds are calm and soothing, with a few stupas scattered around. The walls are plated in gold design, adding to the temple's grandeur. Despite being located along the bustling bar street, the temple offers a tranquil retreat, with free entrance for all who wish to experience its beauty and serenity.
