Wat Luang, nestled among other temples, is a pleasant sight to behold. Its location and aesthetic appeal make it a worthwhile stop, even though it may not stand out as the most distinguished among its peers.This temple is one of the oldest in Phrae, a testament to the rich history of the region. It is said that long ago, people migrated from Nan to Phrae, establishing a city. The temple's gate is particularly noteworthy, adding to the overall charm of the place.
The temple, built in the Lanna style, is a jewel of antiquity. It offers a serene and somewhat solitary experience for those who choose to visit. Its age and style make it a must-see for anyone stopping by in Phrae.
The temple grounds are a sight to behold. Located in the heart of Phrae, the ancient temple is surrounded by a 200-year-old teak house and a museum. The temple itself is beautiful, offering a peaceful and quiet atmosphere for visitors.
While the chedi of the temple is impressive, the main temple may seem average to some. However, it is still worth a short visit, even if there are other more impressive temples in Phrae.
Wat Luang is believed to be the oldest temple in Phrae City, possibly established around the 12th or 13th Century. Legend has it that the temple was founded even earlier, in 829, by Phor Khun Luang Pol. The Lanna/Chiang Saen style chedi, known as Chang Kham, was reportedly rebuilt in 1336 on top of an earlier chedi. Despite showing signs of wear, it remains an interesting sight, supported by stone elephants. The main buildings, however, were constructed much later, with the ubosot/vihan dating back to 1872. The temple grounds also house a bronze copy of the Phra Chao Saen Luang Buddha, a relic tower, and one of the original old city gates. A small but interesting Buddhist Museum can also be found within the grounds. The well-tended grounds are comfortable to explore, making it worth spending an hour or so here.
Visitors to the temple can expect to experience its unique character and history. On certain occasions, they may even be invited to participate in a blessing service. While the museum is only open on Saturday mornings, the temple's older structures are often undergoing renovations, funded by donations for items such as roof tiles. Each temple visited offers a unique experience in terms of construction, ethnicity, and operation, and Wat Luang is no exception. It provides a glimpse into the Buddhist way of life, making it a memorable part of any journey.
