About Wat Mai
The tranquility of Sukhothai Historical Park is a sight to behold. The park is home to several Buddha statues that have stood the test of time, maintaining their impressive stature and condition even after hundreds of years. The serenity of the park, coupled with the grandeur of these statues, makes it a beautiful and serene place to visit.Just beside the main entrance of the Central Zone of Sukhothai Historical Park, and adjacent to the King Ramkhamhaeng Monument, lies a small temple. The path leading to this temple is not paved, adding to the rustic charm of the place. The temple is nestled within a small park, offering a quiet and peaceful environment that is often overlooked by many visitors.
However, not all temples in the park are as impressive. One such temple, located near the monument of the king, lacks any key features or significant structures such as Buddha statues, stupas, or columns. This temple may not be the highlight of the park, but it does offer a quiet place to rest and reflect before continuing the exploration of the park.
The Royal Palace, located in the center of old Sukhothai, is a must-visit. This large site spans around 160,000 square meters and contains two main compounds. The entire palace is surrounded by a water moat, adding to its grandeur and historical charm.
Another noteworthy temple in Sukhothai is an awe-inspiring one set in a lovely setting. The age of the temple is palpable, and the grounds are beautifully maintained, making it a peaceful and inspirational place to visit.
To the north of Wat Mahathat is Wat Mai, a temple built in the Ayutthaya style. The main sanctuary of this temple is a brick viham. A significant artifact, a bronze image of the Buddha under a Naga, was discovered here and is now preserved in the nearby Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.
While some temples may not stand out as much as others, they are still worth a visit. One such temple, located off the main path, may not have much to see, but it is included in the price of admission to Sukhothai Historical Park. Therefore, it's worth stopping by to take in the quiet and peaceful atmosphere before moving on to the next site.
