About Wat Makut Kasatriyaram Ratchaworavihan

Wat Makut, also known as Wat Mongkut, is a temple of significant historical and cultural importance. Founded by King Rama IV, also known as King Mongkut, it holds a special place in the nation's history. King Mongkut is a well-known figure, not just in Thailand, but also in the West, thanks to a popular novel. However, it's important to note that the novel is not available to the public in Thailand.

The temple is often referred to as the temple of Rama IV's reign, as he not only founded it, but also established an enclosed monastery for himself. In a similar vein, he built another nearby temple for his beloved queen, Queen Sommanas, who tragically passed away at a young age due to complications during pregnancy. The pair of temples, with their shared history and close proximity, evoke a sense of romance, reminiscent of the story of the Taj Mahal in India, albeit on a smaller scale.

Upon entering the temple, one is greeted by the sight of Buddha statues dedicated to the king and queen, standing together on the same base. The architecture of the temple is unique and grand, with an air of majesty. The interior of the main hall is adorned with stunning royal artist paintings, a testament to the high level of craftsmanship of the time. The pillars are painted in different colors, depicting the lives of good and evil men according to Buddhist texts. It's interesting to note that heretics, such as Christians and Muslims, are grouped with the evil men, and are located farthest from the main Buddha image seated at the innermost part of the hall.

Despite its historical significance and grandeur, the temple is a haven of peace and tranquility. However, the platform in front of the temple can be quite noisy due to car parking. Despite this, the temple sees few tourists, making it a perfect spot for those seeking a quiet retreat. The temple is well-maintained and clean, with the toilets always kept in pristine condition.

The temple is easily accessible, with bus number 53 from Khaosan Road being a convenient mode of transport. The parking is adequate, making it a hassle-free experience for those driving. Whether one is visiting for a funeral, as many locals do, or simply to appreciate the beauty and history of the place, Wat Makut is a destination worth visiting.
