Located in the city center, the temple is steeped in history. It was built over 700 years ago, between 1239 and 1311, and is known as the temple of the crouching elephant. The temple was reportedly the personal place of worship for the mother of King M’engager Rai. The architecture is splendid, with ornate decorations that captivate visitors.

The Wat Ming Mueang Temple has been a place of worship for local people and market-goers for generations. Its central location makes it easy to visit along with the nearby Mung Mueang temple. The temple was built during the reign of King Mengrai the Great and was originally known as Wat Chang Moop, or the Temple of the Crouching Elephant. In 1970, it was renamed Wat Ming Muang, meaning the Auspicious Temple of the City, and was granted Wisung Khama Sima, a royal granting of the land for monks to have the ordination hall or to do religious rites. The temple was founded by Chao Nang Talamae Sri, wife of King Mengrai and daughter of a Burmese King. The temple was a personal temple of Phra Nang Ming Uao Jom Muang, King Meng Rai's mother. The temple houses a beautiful bronze sculpture of King Mengrai and his wife, Queen Devi Usapayako.

Despite its small size, the temple is lavishly decorated. Visitors often stumble upon locals taking wedding photos in the afternoon, adding to the charm of the place. A visit to the temple doesn't take long, usually no more than 15 minutes, but it's worth a quick look if you're in the area.
