About Wat Muang

Wat Muang, a beautiful temple complex, is a must-visit destination for those who are intrigued by the spiritual and the supernatural. The temple complex is home to a variety of displays that provide a glimpse into the Buddhist interpretation of hell. These displays, while somewhat disturbing, are a unique feature of the temple and are sure to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

The main attraction of Wat Muang is the large, golden Buddha statue. Standing at an impressive 92 meters tall, it is the tallest statue in Thailand and the second tallest in Southeast Asia. The statue, which took 18 years to complete and was finished in 2008, is made of concrete and painted gold. It is in the seated posture known as the Maravijaya Attitude. The sight of the golden Buddha amidst the vast green fields is truly a sight to behold.

The temple complex is quite large and can take more than three hours to explore fully. Therefore, it is recommended to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat of the sun. The grounds are well-maintained and easy to navigate. In addition to the Buddha statue, there are also depictions of heaven and hell, as well as a large statue of Guan Yin.

Wat Muang is located in Phai Cham Sin, 8 km from Ang Thong. It can be reached from Pattaya by a rental car, a journey of more than 250 km that takes about four hours. The route to the temple is scenic and green, adding to the overall experience of the visit.

Near the temple complex, there is a local market that sells Thai and sacred souvenirs, as well as visitors’ necessities like hand fans and hats. There is also a section for food, although the cleanliness and quality of the food may not be up to standard.

For those traveling from Bangkok, getting to Wat Muang can be a bit of a challenge, but it is definitely worth the effort. The journey involves taking a mini bus to the town of Ang Thong, and then a motorbike taxi to the temple. The mini bus ride costs around 100 baht per person, and the motorbike taxi costs about 100 baht each way.

Wat Muang is not just a tourist attraction, but also a place of religious significance. It is important to remember to dress and behave appropriately when visiting. Knees and arms must be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering certain areas.

One downside of Wat Muang is the lack of information available about the displays and statues. Without a guide or a good understanding of Thai culture and Buddhism, it can be difficult to fully appreciate the meaning behind the images. However, even without this knowledge, the sheer size and grandeur of the Buddha statue and the uniqueness of the hellish displays make Wat Muang a worthwhile destination.
