The beauty of the intricately carved stone Buddha statue is a sight to behold at Wat Pa Phuttharam, a serene temple nestled near the mountains. The highlight of this temple is the magnificent Buddha Mahakantaraj, also known as the Emerald Buddha. This three-meter high Buddha statue is carved from granite stone from the cave walls, making it the first Buddha statue in Thailand to be carved directly from the cave wall. This unique piece of art is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans who created it.The journey to pay respects to the Buddha Mahakantaraj can be a surprising experience. While exploring the temple, visitors may not notice signs indicating the need to wear a bag over short clothing. This oversight can lead to a stern reprimand from the temple's caretaker. However, it's important to remember that this is part of the temple's protocol to maintain respect and decorum. After paying respects to the Buddha Mahakantaraj, visitors may feel watched as they prepare to leave, but this is simply part of the temple's security measures. Despite this, the temple staff are generally friendly and welcoming.
The interior of the Wat Pa Phuttharam is a large hall surrounded by beautiful oil paintings and numerous Buddha statues. The standout feature is the Buddha statue in the Tummajakkappavattana Sutta posture, which is carved from stone and appears to float out from the cave wall. This unique carving technique adds to the mystical aura of the temple.
The journey to the Buddha Mahakantaraj can be a bit narrow, but there is ample parking available. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a friendly caretaker. Visitors are encouraged to pay respects to the reclining Buddha first before proceeding to the Buddha Mahakantaraj, also known as the Emerald Buddha. At first glance, the Buddha's eyes appear incredibly beautiful. After paying respects and walking under the Buddha's legs, visitors will notice that the entire body of the Buddha, including the eyes, is carved from stone. This realization brings a sense of awe and appreciation for the craftsmanship involved. The Buddha's compassionate aura is palpable, making the visit a truly memorable experience.
