About Wat Pa Sak
Wat Pa Sak, a historical, archeological, and Buddhist site in Chiang Saen District, Thailand, is a serene and tranquil destination that offers a unique glimpse into the past. Nestled just outside the city's old walls, it is easily accessible from the city center and the golden triangle, a few kilometers away. The site is about 850 meters from Wat Phrathat chedi Luang, another significant landmark in the area. The site is home to several ruins nestled amidst the trees, the most beautiful and best preserved of which is a Chedi-like structure adorned with intricate carvings right to the top. The park is well maintained, clean, and peaceful, offering a quiet respite from the noise of the city. Signboards scattered throughout the site provide information about the structures and their historical significance.
Despite its beauty, the site can get quite hot during the day, so visitors are advised to carry a hat, sunblock, and water. The site is not typically crowded, which adds to its peaceful ambiance, but also means that taxis are not readily available. Therefore, it is advisable to organize transport both ways.
The site is particularly interesting for its layout, which provides insight into how temples were traditionally arranged. The historic town walls are also present, adding to the site's historical appeal. The setting is serene, with good walking paths that allow visitors to explore at their own pace.
The temple and ruins are a prime example of the Early Classic Lan Na architecture, having been built between 1295 and 1345. The remaining corner of the temple is constructed of solid brick, which has allowed it to withstand invasions and earthquakes. While it may not have the awe of Siem Reap, it is still a site of historical significance, particularly in relation to the historic warring between the kingdoms of Burma and Thailand.
Visitors can also enjoy a unique experience by visiting the local market to buy flowers for an offering at the temple. The grounds are a perfect spot for a picnic, especially during sunrise. The site is surrounded by beautiful teak trees, which add to its serene atmosphere. On certain days, local school children can be seen playing music, further enhancing the ambiance.
Wat Pa Sak is considered one of the best ruins to visit in Chiang Saen. The ruins are a bit outside of the city past the old brick walls and moat, but are well worth the small 50 Baht entrance fee. The Chedi with its several Buddhas is still intact, and the remnants of buildings that once were add to the site's intrigue.
Chiang Saen is a town with a unique history, having had as much to do with Burmese traders and armies as those from the Thai centers of power. This history is reflected in its eclectic collection of ruins, the most important of which is Wat Pa Sak. The site is home to rows of elegant standing Buddhas that date back to the fourteenth century. Some of the original stucco figures remain, offering a delightful sight for visitors and photographers alike. The main stupa was under restoration at the time of the last visit, indicating ongoing efforts to preserve this important historical site.
