About Wat Phra Boromathat Chaiya

Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya is a revered temple located in Surat Thani, a province in southern Thailand. It is a place of respect and tranquility, not only for the locals but also for visitors from nearby provinces. The temple is a prime example of Srivijaya architecture, a style that is both elaborate and captivating. It is worth noting that only men are allowed to take the bridge close to Phra That, adding a unique aspect to the temple visit.

The general atmosphere of Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya Ratchaworawihan is one of quietude and peace. It is often compared to the Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan Temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, yet each has its distinct ambiance. Before entering the temple gate, visitors are greeted by a small number of souvenir shops, around seven to eight in total. These shops are known for their OTOP products, particularly the Chaiya salted egg, a local delicacy that is popular among the Chaiya people and is available in every store.

Despite being one of the many temples and religious sites in Thailand, Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya stands out for its sheer beauty and the fact that it is not overrun by tourists. It is slightly off the beaten track, requiring a small detour off AH2, but the journey is well worth it.

Wat Pra That Chaiya is home to one of the oldest stupas or pagodas in Thailand. The sight of the three Buddha sculptures outside the temple is awe-inspiring, creating a sense of sacredness. The stupa itself is impressive and attractive, drawing visitors in for a closer look.

Located approximately 40 km from Suratthani downtown, this sacred stupa is highly respected by many. Despite its distance from the city center, it continues to attract a steady stream of visitors due to its historical and cultural significance.

Chaiya, where the temple is located, is a small town in southern Thailand. It is a charming place filled with friendly locals, delicious seafood, rich culture, and numerous temples. The town's welcoming atmosphere has even led some visitors, like Rolando from Panama, to decide to stay.

Interestingly, Chaiya was once the mainland capital of the mighty trading empire of Sriwijaya, based in Palembang, South Sumatra. Today, it is a peaceful country town filled with noodle shops and banana trees. However, remnants of its glorious past can still be found scattered along its rambling lanes, with Wat Phra Chaiya being the most notable. The temple, whose name is a local corruption of Sriwijaya, is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site and is considered one of the finest temples in the South. It also houses an interesting museum with a magnificent bronze frog-drum and other archaeological treasures. Art lovers traveling through Southern Thailand should definitely make a stop at this historical gem.
