About Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao

Nestled in the old city quarter by the Wang River, a unique fusion of Lanna and Myanmar architecture awaits exploration. This royal temple, once the home of the Emerald Buddha statue for 32 years before its relocation to the Grand Palace in Bangkok, is a sight to behold. Its Burmese-styled wooden roofs, gilded with gold and adorned with bells, offer a unique and different aesthetic from traditional Thai architecture.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a large square pond filled with lotuses at the main entrance. The pond is flanked by Naga statues, adding to the mystical allure of the place. This temple is not just a religious site, but also a significant historical landmark, having been visited by HRH the King of Thailand, Rama IX in 2501.

While the temple's claim to fame is its history as the resting place for the Emerald Buddha, it offers more than just that. It boasts a magnificent gold-topped chedi and a lovely Burmese style pagoda. However, some may find it average compared to other temples in Lampang and Thailand in general. For instance, Wat Pongsanuk Tai, located not far away, is another lovely temple worth visiting.

The temple complex is vast and offers a variety of sights and experiences. Apart from the main temple, there are many additional buildings, stupas, trees, and gardens to explore. One of the highlights that many visitors often miss is the fantastic camera obscura, a unique feature that adds to the charm of the place.

This beautiful temple is a must-visit when in Lampang. Along with Wat Prathat Lampang Luang, it is considered one of the must-see temples in the area. Its beauty and grandeur make it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.

Among the 6-7 temples in Lampang, many visitors find this one to be the best. It houses a large, high, and really nice Chedi, along with many smaller temples and buildings. The entrance, marked by long, large dragons, is also a sight to behold. This temple, with its unique architecture and rich history, offers a memorable experience for all who visit.
