About Wat Phra Ram

Nestled in the heart of a vibrant region lies an ancient temple, a lesser-known gem waiting to be explored. Despite its less pristine condition compared to other temples in the area, it holds an undeniable charm that makes it worth a visit. The temple's impressive open grounds are a testament to its grandeur, even as it stands in ruins.

The temple, while not as crowded as others, charges an entrance fee. However, what remains of this once magnificent structure is still vast and awe-inspiring. The temple's ruins are a popular spot for local dogs, adding a unique charm to the site. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk around the circumference of the ruins, a fun way to get in some exercise while taking in the historical surroundings. The temple is conveniently located near two other ruins and temples, making it an ideal stop on a tour of the region.

Known as Wat Phra Ram, this 14th-century Buddhist temple is a small yet significant part of Ayutthaya city center. The temple is situated next to a panoramic lake and is in close proximity to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. Built in 1369 on the site of the first Ayutthaya, the temple has been extended and restored several times over the centuries.

Wat Phra Ram is characterized by a large central prang, or tower, surrounded by smaller towers. Visitors can ascend the holy tower using the stairs on its surface. While only a fraction of the original stucco work remains, it provides a glimpse into the rich detail that once adorned the temple. The site also bears the marks of the earth that was dug out for the construction of other temples, such as Wat Mahathat and Wat Ratchaburana, and the former Royal Palace. Adjacent to the temple is a large park with a sizable lake, known as Beung Phra Ram.

Despite its smaller size compared to other temples, Wat Phra Ram towers over the surrounding area. A short walk from Wat Phra Si Sanphet, it is a beautiful sight to behold. The temple's unique details, which can be appreciated with a keen eye, add to its charm. It may not be as bustling as other sites, but it is a must-visit for anyone touring the Ayutthaya Historic Park.

Wat Phra Ram is quietly impressive, seemingly off the main tour bus list. This large site bears hallmarks of Cambodia and Myanmar, offering a unique blend of cultural influences. The temple's relative tranquility allows visitors to have the site almost to themselves, making it a personal favorite for many.

As part of the 14 objects of Ayutthaya Historic Park, Wat Phra Ram is a small yet delightful Wat, or temple. It is not very busy, allowing visitors to take their time exploring its unique details. A trip to this temple should not be missed when visiting the park. Its quiet beauty and rich history make it a worthwhile addition to any travel itinerary.
