About Wat Phra That Chang Kham Worawihan
The temple, nestled in the heart of the city, is a sight to behold. Its beauty is accentuated by the two pink elephants that stand guard at the entrance, a sight that is sure to catch the eye of any passerby. The temple complex is not just a single building, but a collection of three structures, each with its own unique charm. The main Wat, which houses the Buddha, is particularly captivating. The narrow building beside the large ordination hall is home to a particularly fine standing Buddha, a sight that is sure to leave visitors in awe.The temple is not just a place of worship, but also a place of peace and tranquility. The illuminated temple gardens provide a romantic setting for a leisurely stroll at dusk. The temple's location, opposite the tourist office and diagonally opposite Wat Phumin, makes it easily accessible for visitors. Despite its proximity to the city centre, the temple offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The temple is not just a place of beauty, but also a place of historical significance. It is an old temple, with the primary viharn building having been constructed in 1458. The viharn houses a set of Lanna period scrolls containing descriptions of history, law, and Buddhist scriptures. Adjacent to the viharn is a very old stupa/chedi, believed to be from the same period as the viharn. The chedi is adorned with a series of 24 carvings of the top halves of elephants, a feature that is very representative of the Sukhothai period.
Despite its historical significance, the temple is somewhat plain and simple in its design. It lacks the grandeur and opulence of some of the other temples in the city. However, this simplicity is part of its charm. It offers a contrast to its more popular neighbour, Wat Phumin, and is worth a visit for those looking for a different temple experience.
The temple is regarded by many local people as being the second most important temple in Nan after Wat Phra That Chae Haeng. While it may not be everyone's favourite temple, it is certainly an important place for Thais to visit. Whether you're on a touring holiday or just walking around the city, the temple is worth a visit. It may not be worth a special trip, but if you're in the area, it's worth taking the time to explore.
In conclusion, the temple offers a unique blend of beauty, tranquility, and historical significance. Whether you're drawn to the fine standing Buddha, the illuminated temple gardens, or the historical viharn and chedi, there's something for everyone at this temple. It's a place where form and energy come together to create a truly special experience. Don't miss the chance to experience it for yourself.
