About Wat Phra That Chedi Luang
The ancient temple nestled next to the Chiang Saen National Museum is a sight to behold. Despite some confusion with a similarly named temple in Chiang Mai, this temple stands out with its well-preserved architecture and serene atmosphere. The temple is currently undergoing some construction, with a new temple being built adjacent to it. Despite the ongoing work, the temple retains its charm and is definitely worth a visit. This temple is one of the oldest in the area, and it has withstood the test of time. Although parts of it have suffered damage due to flooding, it remains a timeless beauty and a peaceful place of worship. The ruins only add to its ancient allure, making it a must-visit for those who appreciate history and architecture.
The temple is a highlight of the Golden Triangle tour from Chiang Rai. Despite the tour being a half-day affair, the temple, with its ancient architecture and peaceful location, is worth every minute spent. The visit to the temple is brief, but the experience is unforgettable.
The temple is home to an impressive 18m-high chedi with an octagonal base, a classic Chiang Saen style. Built by King Saen Phu, the 3rd ruler of the Lanna kingdom in the early 13th Century, the chedi is a testament to the rich history of the region. The temple is currently under restoration, but it doesn't take away from its historical significance. Monks can often be seen around the compound, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the place.
The temple is believed to be over 700 years old and is currently being restored. The main chedi is one of the largest and tallest in all of Thailand, making it a sight to behold. The temple compound also houses a Bodhi tree, one of the oldest in Thailand. The centuries-old trees growing over the bases and foundation walls of the ruins add to the ancient charm of the place.
Chiang Saen, located at the northern tip of Thailand, is a charming riverside town. The town is home to a variety of time-weathered temples, including Wat Chedi Luang. The 16th-century chedi, very Thai in style, towers over the town. The wat, however, has not survived the years, with only the brick foundations and a few statues remaining. Despite this, it is worth a visit if you are in the vicinity.
Dating back to either 1331 or 1291, depending on the account, Wat Chedi Luang is a sight to behold. Located next to the Chiang Saen Museum, the grass-covered chedi stands tall at 197 feet (58m). The temple, complete with a new roof, is still in use today by the local residents. Inside, visitors can find three beautiful Buddha images and may even have the chance to meet a monk who can offer blessings. This temple is certainly worth a visit if you find yourself in Chiang Saen.
