About Wat Phra That Chom Kitti

The tranquil temple complex, nestled on a hilltop, offers a serene and quiet atmosphere that is perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The temple is surrounded by a mix of new and ancient buildings, creating a unique blend of old and new. The journey to the temple is an adventure in itself, requiring either a climb up 330 steps or a drive around the back to the top. The effort is well worth it, as the temple offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

The temple complex is the second most popular in the area, according to locals. It features bell gongs of different tones that visitors can exercise, adding to the serene atmosphere. The interior of the temple is modest, but still holds its own charm, especially for those who have not visited many temples. The temple is not overly commercialized, maintaining its authenticity and tranquility. However, visitors are advised to plan their meals elsewhere, as there are no dining options within the temple complex.

One of the highlights of the temple is Wat Phra That Chom Kitti, an ancient monument located in the north of Thailand. It stands on the summit of Chom Kitti Hill, offering great views of the Mekong River and Chiang Saen. The monument can be reached via a stairway of 350 steps from the main road at the base of the mountain, or by driving up for those who prefer a less strenuous route.

The golden pagoda on the small hill, Doi Noi, is one of the most important in Lanna. It is believed to have been built more than a thousand years ago and has been restored many times, most recently after the 2007 earthquake. The pagoda is a testament to the 'Impermanence of Things', with different parts of the pagoda reflecting different restoration periods. The pagoda is easily accessible by bike, private car, or taxi, or for those seeking a challenge, by walking up the 300+ step naga stairways from the base.

The temple complex also includes the forest hill temples, which can be reached by steep serpent staircases or by road. The views from the hilltop are spectacular, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding area. One of the temples was under renovation at the time of visit, but this added to the interest of the visit. The temple features a typical Buddhist design and offers good views of the surrounding area.

The temple is worth the 308 step climb, as it feels like ascending to the sky and leaving the world behind. The stuppa is four-sided, each with its own message, while the temple itself is unusual. The temple offers a raised view over the Khong River to Laos, adding to the overall experience. Visitors are advised to take their time to explore the temple and soak in the amazing energy it offers.
