About Wat Phra That Chom Thong

Doi Chom Thong, a solitary hill on the banks of the River Kok, is a place steeped in history and legend. It is said that King Mang Rai was following an elephant that had wandered off when he first came upon this hill. The site was believed to be the home of spirits before Buddhism was introduced, and elephants are a significant part of its legend. This hill is not just a natural wonder, but also a spiritual center that has been a part of Chiang Rai's history for centuries.

At the heart of Doi Chom Thong is the Golden Chedi, a temple that stands as a testament to the area's rich history. According to the Yonok Chronicle, the Chedi was originally built in 940 to house the Lord Buddha's relics. When King Mang Rai visited Doi Chom Thong in 1263, he found the area suitable for the establishment of a city. He then ordered the beginning of the construction of the city of Chiang Rai and had Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong restored.

This significant ancient monastery holds historical relevance to the establishment of Chiang Rai town. It's a sight to behold, with its brand new chapel building that adds a modern touch to the ancient site. However, some might argue that the previous old Lanna traditional structure style was more attractive and charming. One of the highlights of the monastery is the stunning, elaborately fine artwork on the wooden chapel door.

What sets this temple apart is that it holds the relics of the Buddha. It has been in use for almost 1,000 years. Built on a hill, it offers beautiful views onto the river below. It's definitely a place worth visiting if you are in Chiang Rai. The temple overlooks the entire city area and offers a scenic view of the Kok river. Built as long ago as the 10th century, the highlight is the golden hexagonal chedi which houses the Lord Buddha's relics.

The temple is close by the Naval City Pillar, so visitors can see both at the same time. It's a very serene place to visit, offering a sense of peace and tranquility. It's a beautiful shrine that's worth a visit, and it's free to go in and show your respects.

Despite its small size, the temple is beautiful and offers a unique experience. Visitors have a chance to make a WAI to PHRA THART and can decorate PHRA THART by wrapping around with a gold-in-color cloth. However, it's important to note that only men can do this because of religious reasons. Visitors are allowed to bring a camera to capture the beauty of the temple and its surroundings.

While some might argue that the temple is just another one in the area and needs some tender loving care, its historical significance and the legends that surround it make it a unique destination. The journey up the big hill might be a bit of a trek, but the views and the experience are worth it.
