About Wat Phra That Phanom

The city is home to a grand temple, a lively and handsome structure that boasts a Lao style gold and white stupa. This stupa is surrounded by a cloister, the entrances of which are adorned with fine paintings. On certain days, traditional dancers perform outside the main wall, inviting passersby to join in the festivities.

The temple complex is a sight to behold. The main temple, as well as its surroundings, are truly beautiful. Despite being a popular destination, the atmosphere remains calm and peaceful. Even when busy, it never feels crowded, making it a must-visit location for anyone in the area.

The Phra That Panom stupa holds a special significance for those born on a Sunday or in the Year of the Monkey. It is believed to grant wishes for having children. The stupa, which can be seen from the main road along the Khong River, is elegant and inviting. Incenses, candles, and lotus flowers for praying are readily available in front of the stupa. Visitors can donate money to the temple before praying and reflecting on the Lord Buddha's teachings. The temple grounds also house several souvenir shops and amulet vendors. For those interested, there is a post office located next to the temple, with locals more than willing to provide directions.

Despite some commercialization, the temple remains an impressive sight. The many fine buildings are a joy to the eye, and visitors can expect to meet Thais from all parts of the country, eager to worship. The temple is a great place to interact with locals, including children keen to practice their English. While there may be some individuals asking for money, the temple is officially free to visit.

Every year at the end of January or early February, according to the Lunar calendar, the Wat Pra That Panom temple holds a spectacular ceremony. This annual event pays homage to the stupa which houses the Buddha relic. Thousands of faithful Buddhists, including Thais, Laotians, and many local tribes along the famous river, attend this event. It is a must-see for tourists across the globe.

The temple grounds are large and offer plenty to see and observe for those interested in Thai culture. It is a great place to meet people from all over Thailand who come on worship pilgrimages to this place.
