About Wat Phutthaisawan Temple
Wat Phutthaisawan, located just outside the 'island' of Ayutthaya, is a hidden gem that is often underrated. This temple is a paradise for photographers, with its reclining Buddha, rows of gold Buddhas encircling the central stupa, and the stupa itself. The temple's grandeur and the intricate details of its architecture make it a must-visit destination.The temple is best visited during weekdays to avoid the crowd. The tranquility of the place is best experienced when it's not bustling with people. The temple is not just a tourist spot, but also a place to quiet your soul. Each stone, each part of the construction reflects the age and the history of the place.
The temple is somewhat sprawling and can be a bit confusing for first-time visitors. There are some ruins at the far end and a large white pagoda surrounded by Buddha images in a courtyard. Despite its size, the temple is only a partial ruin and therefore provides a much better illustration of the scale of what a 'working' Wat would have been like all those years ago.
The temple is located not far from Wat Chai Wattanaram. The best way to get there is by bicycle, TukTuk, or by boat. If you have seen or passed Wat Chai Wattanaram, continue on the small road, after one kilometer take a left, everything is sign-posted. St.Joseph's church on your left, the temple comes into sight with its two huge white towers (prangs), one old, one new.
What's special about this temple is that there is an old -unused- temple to the back which is the impressive one, but in the front where there's parking is a working temple. Don't forget to walk to the very end, exit the old temple's structure onto a lawn to your right, you'll find a beautiful reclining buddha enclosed by partly destroyed brick walls.
The temple is not centrally located and you'll need a bike or taxi to get there. But the journey is worth it. The grounds are fairly big and there is an active temple there. One of the highlights of the temple is the main prang/stupa, which happens to be open for viewing. But be careful, bats hang from the ceiling and their droppings are everywhere!
Despite being a bit out of the way, Wat Phutthaisawan is definitely worth the journey. Its tranquility, grandeur, and historical significance make it a must-visit destination in Ayutthaya.
