About Wat Rai Khing

Wat Rai Khing, a serene and historic temple, is nestled in the heart of Nakhon Pathom Province. This sacred place is a haven for those seeking peace of mind and relaxation. It is a popular spot for making merit and feeding fish, activities that are deeply respected and cherished by the locals. The tranquility of the temple and its surroundings make it an ideal destination for those who wish to engage in spiritual practices.

The temple is situated by the riverside, adding to its charm and allure. It is well-organized and maintained, making it a popular destination for Thais who come to make wishes for good luck. The main hall is a focal point for prayer, while the river at the back of the temple is a favorite spot for feeding fish.

Wat Rai Khing is not just a temple, but a living pilgrimage site that has been standing for centuries. The main Buddha, which is in Lanna style, is believed to have appeared centuries ago. This miraculous story, along with the temple's popularity for divination, attracts regular pilgrims. The temple complex is large and houses many Buddha images, beautiful Kuan Yin statues, and even the Navagraha deities (the planets).

The temple is highly popular with local people and can get quite crowded, especially near Nakhon Pathom. It was built in 1791 and is only 32 kilometers from Bangkok. The Buddha image, named “Luang Pho Wat Rai Khing”, was brought from Wat Sala Poon and enshrined here. According to legend, this Buddha image was found floating in the river, adding to the temple's mystique and allure.

Wat Rai Khing is also known for its natural fish sanctuary, home to hundreds of thousands of Sawai fish. Visitors can buy loafs of bread to feed these big catfish-like, freshwater fishes. For history enthusiasts, the temple houses a museum that collects and exhibits various kinds of artefacts including ancient bowls, mural paintings, and old books, all of which were donated by the townspeople.

The temple plays a significant role in the lives of many locals, who visit it during special occasions or on Buddha Day. It also houses many wax statues of holy monks that have passed on. In addition to its spiritual offerings, the temple also has a food court and retail shops where visitors can purchase souvenirs.

Despite its charm and significance, Wat Rai Khing remains off the beaten path for many tourists. It is situated in Nakhon Pathom province, not far from Bangkok, and can be a challenge to reach without local guidance. However, those who make the journey are rewarded with a rich and fulfilling experience. The temple complex is large enough to spend an entire day exploring, and the opportunity to feed Koi and Gold Fish is a popular activity among both children and adults.
