About Wat Sala Loi
Wat Sala Loi, nestled in the northeastern part of the city of Nakhon Ratchasima, is a destination that has been attracting both locals and tourists alike. Built in 1827 by Thao Suranari and her husband, this temple has become a popular spot for meditation and is considered one of the top things to do in Nakhon Ratchasima. The temple is well-organized with ample parking, making it a convenient destination for visitors. The temple is particularly popular during rainy mornings, with locals flocking to offer their prayers. Tourists are also a common sight, with many opting to pay 20 baht for flowers and praying sticks. The temple is not just a place of worship, but also a cultural hub that offers a glimpse into the local way of life.
Despite not being an ancient temple, Wat Sala Loi holds significant historical importance. It houses the famous statue of Lady Yamo, a revered figure who, along with her band of lady warriors, cropped their hair to resemble men and fought fiercely against the advancing Burmese army. The temple is well laid out with courtyards and prayer recital chambers, and it is common to see a never-ending line of Buddhist devotees paying their respects to both Lady Yamo and Buddha. The temple also boasts clean restrooms, a tourist police booth, and a small Buddhist zen park with water features.
One of the highlights of Wat Sala Loi is the meeting hall, built in the shape of a boat riding the waves, a unique feature in Thai architecture. Decorated with local Dan Kwian clay tiles, the hall narrates the life of Buddha on its walls. The door, made of metal, adds to the charm of the hall, which also houses a large statue of Buddha. The temple is conveniently located just 500 meters from Rop Mueang Road and is open daily from 08.30 to 16.30.
Visiting Wat Sala Loi is always a pleasure, with its lovely surroundings and numerous attractions. The peaceful ambiance of the temple, the waterfall, and the small shrines make for a serene experience. Visitors can say a prayer, burn some incense, light a candle, or hang a small wreath of flowers, which can be bought at the temple for a mere 20 THB.
The temple stands out from most Thai temples due to its unique architecture. Shaped like a Chinese junk and covered in brown ceramic tiles, it exudes a 1960s modernist look, a nod to the year it was built, 1967. While it may not be a typical tourist attraction, it is a local favorite and worth a visit for those with time to spare.
Wat Sala Loi is not just a temple, but also a place of historical significance. It is here that the cremains of Ya Mo, a great heroine of Thailand, are kept. The temple's modern architecture sets it apart from the classical buildings of other temples in Thailand, making it a unique destination for both locals and visitors.
