About Wat Si Don Chai

Nestled next to Pantip Plaza, a charming temple stands, often overlooked by the casual passerby. During a visit, one might find a lively gathering taking place under a canopy at the front, providing a unique opportunity to observe the temple in a festive atmosphere. Despite the occasional scaffolding for maintenance, the temple's beauty remains undiminished, offering a serene and picturesque view.

This temple, though not widely known, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The lack of English signage adds to its mystique, inviting the curious to explore further. The two-storied Viharn is a sight to behold, adorned with glittering mosaics and intricate carvings depicting scenes from Buddhist hell on the window shutters. Inside, the walls are lined with murals of the Vessantara Jataka, a popular tale in Buddhist folklore.

The temple's ubosot, or ordination hall, is a modern structure, marked by charming sema boundary stones. The ho trai, or library, is a newer addition, built in the Lanna style with a teak upper floor. The temple grounds also house old wooden kuti, or monk's quarters, and a small chedi, or stupa, built in the Burmese style.

Wat Si Don Chai, as the temple is known, is a splendid complex that has stood for about 130 years. Recently, it underwent a complete repaint, further enhancing its appeal. The temple is a delight to explore, offering a wealth of photographic opportunities. The complex includes a large main hall, several smaller buildings, statues, accommodation blocks, and ample parking space.

Wat Si Don Chai is often the site of various ceremonies, transforming the vast open areas into vibrant hubs of activity. At the rear of the main hall, a large stupa stands in what appears to be a small cemetery, housing a number of interesting tombs. The main hall, however, may sometimes be closed to visitors.

Located opposite Pantip Plaza in the night bazaar area of Changklan Road, Wat Si Don Chai is easy to find. A visit to this temple is highly recommended for those seeking a unique cultural experience. Despite its relative obscurity, Wat Si Don Chai is a treasure trove of history and art, promising a rewarding visit to those who venture to explore it.
