About Wat Sorasak
Wat Sorasak, a fascinating temple located in the Sukhothai Historical Park, is a sight to behold. Constructed in the early 15th century, this temple is nestled in the northern part of the park, within the ancient city walls. The temple's most striking feature is its bell-shaped stupa, which sits atop a sturdy brick base. The base of the temple is encircled by 24 elephant heads, some complete with torsos and front legs, creating a unique and captivating sight. The chedi, or stupa, of Wat Sorasak is built on a square base and is surrounded by 24 elephant forequarters. This architectural marvel, built around 1416, is a beautiful sight to behold. The stupa, although smaller than others in the landscape, has a unique selling point - its base is adorned with more than 30 elephant statues. The design seems to suggest that the elephants are bearing the weight of the stupa on top, a concept that is sure to fascinate children.
Compared to the main temples in the historical park, Wat Sorasak is modest. However, its main attraction lies in the well-preserved series of elephant heads that circle the base of the structure. Another site, Wat Chang Lom, located about half a mile east of the old city, also features a similar design, but Wat Sorasak's elephant sculptures are better preserved.
Wat Sorasak is one of three monuments in the Sukhothai park that are surrounded by elephants. The other two are Wat Chang Lom in the east and Wat Chedi si Hong in the south. Wat Sorasak is conveniently located close to the royal city, midway to the North site. Visitors can reach the temple by bike, on foot, or by tuk tuk. Despite its beauty, Wat Sorasak sees very few visitors, making it a peaceful and serene place to visit.
Wat Sorasak is well-renovated, and the elephants at the base of the stupas are beautifully sculptured. The temple is located in the northern part of the Sukhothai Park, outside the main park area. It is about a 5-minute walk from the northern fencing of the main historical area. Comparing Wat Chang Lom with Wat Sorasak, one can see the difference in the preserved and not preserved state of the stupas. Both temples are unique and different from the architectural designs of the other temples.
Wat Sorasak is located on the northern aspect of the central zone. Despite its modest size, it is in great condition and is worth a photo on your way to the northern zone. When visiting Sukhothai, it is essential to bring sunscreen and water, as the area can get quite hot and there are few shops between the temples. It is also advisable to visit early in the day to avoid the tourist buses. Hiring bikes is recommended as the distances between the temples can be quite far to walk. Lastly, don't forget to bring your camera and an extra battery, as the beautiful sights of Sukhothai will have you snapping pictures all day long.
