About Wat Suthat

Constructed in the early 19th century, the temple was designed to house the grand 25-foot-tall Phra Sri Sakyamuni Buddha statue. The temple is also known for its massive red frame of a giant swing, which was once used in annual ceremonies to celebrate and thank Shiva. The temple is particularly famous for the Medicine Buddha (Phra Kring) amulet. On special occasions such as Vesak / Bucha Day, the temple sees an influx of devotees coming for prayers. The temple complex is vast and features many high steps. Upon entrance, a counter asks for a 100 baht fee from tourists, which includes an English brochure and a drink.

The temple is not as crowded as others, yet it exudes an elegant charm. The murals on the wall significantly enhance the beauty of the temple. The grounds are surrounded by Buddha images, adding to the serene atmosphere. The temple complex houses two chapels, both worth visiting. As with all temple visits, appropriate attire is required, including a shirt with sleeves and pants or a skirt past the knees. Since shoes are removed upon entering, it is advisable to wear socks.

The temple is located just around downtown, often overlooked due to its location at the back of the commercial area and giant malls along Ratchabophit Rd. Its beautiful architecture, built on angular marble pillars, supports astonishing and colorful roofs. In front of the temple, the Giant Swing, once used in religious rituals during Brahmin ceremonies, is a must-see.

Wat Suthat is one of the very old and important temples in Bangkok. The wall painting, architecture, and Buddha styles are unique here. The temple is a must-visit for history and temple enthusiasts. The peaceful atmosphere inside the temple is a highlight for many visitors.

Wat Suthat is a favorite among many visitors to Bangkok. Despite its simplicity, the temple houses many statues to admire. The main space is peaceful, and the Buddha statue is beautiful and impressively large. The temple was started by Rama I, with some doors carved by Rama II and finished by Rama III. There are 28 pagodas representing all the Buddhas that we know of. The temple is highly recommended and at a price of 20 baht, it is a bargain.

The temple complex is well worth a visit. It is a lovely old complex used for Buddhist services and the training of monks. The monks are very friendly and happy to explain the significance of the various icons. However, it is a working temple and may be closed at times for significant ceremonies. Despite this, it is an extremely pleasant way to escape the hustle of Bangkok.

The temple is the place to get your fix of Buddha images. Surrounding the main wihaan (sanctuary containing the important Buddha image) are dozens of Buddhas. The Buddha in the wihaan is amazing in its own right. The murals on the walls, known as jataka, are incredible and are reputedly some of the most beautiful in Thailand. There are also three other attractions close by that are well worth visiting. They are: 1. Sao Chin-cha (or the giant swing) - a Bhraman swing right outside Wat Suthat; 2. across the road from the swing heading towards the very non-descript Bangkok City Hall, is a marble inscription of the name of Bangkok in Thai; and, 3. to the right of Wat Suthat as you head out towards the swing is Th. Bamrang Muang which has dozens of shops dedicated to selling Buddhist items such as incense, fans, icons, and massive statues. It is a very interesting little area indeed and well worth a look!
