About Wat Tham Khao Pun

The temple complex, nestled near the river bank of the Kwai Noi, is a fascinating link to the past. It may not be the most remarkable of temples, but it holds a significant historical connection to the Allied POWs who built the Thai-Burma Railway. Visitors can stand on a rock outcropping that the POWs had to remove to allow the railway to pass. Walking down to the tracks, one can see two cuttings through the rocks that the POWs had to make. While not as daunting as Hellfire Pass, it is an impressive and easily accessible testament to their ordeal. The temple is conveniently located just a few kilometers past the CWGC at Chung Kai.

The temple complex also houses an intriguing cave system. Visitors are often surprised by the number of rooms inside the cave, making it a fun place to explore. The cave is well-signposted, guiding visitors through the various rooms and towards the exit.

The journey to the temple can be an adventure in itself. Some visitors choose to rent bikes in Kanchanaburi and ride out to the temple, a trip that takes about 40 minutes each way. The temple complex has restrooms and a small entrance fee, which goes towards its upkeep. The cave is a cool retreat, filled with many Buddha statues and is quite large. It offers a peaceful escape from the crowds and noise.

However, visitors should be aware that the cave system has some challenging features. There is a very narrow passage about halfway through the cave, and the exit involves climbing a steep set of around 100 steps. The entrance is a gentle downward slope, but the exit can feel like scaling a mountain.

Despite these challenges, many find the visit worthwhile. The caves house beautiful Buddha statues, and the setup is well made. The temple is not too far from the main city, making it a convenient destination for a day trip.

For a more leisurely visit, one can take a long boat from the River Kwai bridge. The stairs leading to the temple are a bit steep, so it's recommended to allow at least 30-45 minutes to fully appreciate the site without getting too hot and tired. The cave has many different rooms, starting with the reclining Buddha and moving deeper from there. There are a few tight squeezes, but the effort is well worth it. The exit leads up a staircase and out into the open, where visitors can enjoy a moment of tranquility.

The temple complex and its cave system are a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place that surprises and delights, offering a serene and magical experience. Visitors are advised to take their time, respect the Buddhist culture by covering shoulders and knees, and fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of this remarkable place.
