About Wat Tham Pha Daen

The green oasis of Wat Tham Pha Daen, nestled in the mountains, is a sight to behold. A mere 20-25 minutes drive from Sakon Nakon city centre, the temple is well signposted, making it easy for visitors to find. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a parking lot where they can leave their vehicles before hopping onto a shuttle bus for a nominal fee of 20 baht. The shuttle bus takes them on a two-kilometer ride through the mountain forest, up to the temple itself.

The temple is set amidst lush greenery, with the gardens being a major highlight. They are perfectly maintained and offer a serene atmosphere that is different from the usual hustle and bustle of city life. The gardens are home to many ancient tree trunks and a gilded rock with a chedi on top, adding to the uniqueness of the place. However, due to social distancing rules, some parts of the gardens may be closed off.

The temple is not just a place of worship, but also a work of art. Every corner you turn reveals a great view, a sculpture, or an intricately carved piece of wood. For those seeking a bit of adventure, there is a short but strenuous hike to the top of the mountain. The view from the top is breathtaking, offering a panoramic view of Sakon Nakhon and Nong Han fresh water lake.

The temple is also known for its odd designs of stone craft and huge wooden buildings, making it a popular spot for photography. The Ubosot area, accessible via stone stairs, offers a more peaceful environment for those seeking solitude. However, the temple can get quite busy and crowded, especially during Buddhist festivals.

For those who wish to take a break, there is a decent cafe on the premises. The cafe serves good coffee and small snacks, although visitors are advised to bring their own food if they want more than a little snack. On the road leading up to the temple, there are many clothing stores that offer goods at prices substantially cheaper than the textile market in the city. There are also some cute coffee shops that visitors can stop by on their way to or from the temple.

Despite the crowds, the temple's shuttle service is very orderly and well run. Visitors are also checked for their temperature as part of the Covid-19 safety measures. The temple is a very popular place for Thai families, especially on weekends. It is advisable to have a car to get to the temple, as it is located about a 20-minute drive from the city.

In conclusion, Wat Tham Pha Daen is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Sakon Nakhon. Its unique blend of natural beauty, artistic craftsmanship, and spiritual tranquility make it one of the most spectacular sites in all of Thailand. Whether you're a nature lover, an art enthusiast, or a spiritual seeker, this temple has something to offer for everyone.
