The ancient Wat in Sukhothai Historical Park is a sight to behold. One of the most unusual and intriguing features of this place is the walking Buddha statue. This statue, unlike many others, is not seated or reclining but is depicted in a walking posture. This unique representation of Buddha is not only interesting but also provides a great backdrop for photographs.The walking Buddha statue is sculpted in the distinctive Sukhothai style. The statue is set against a vast body of water that lies in front of the Wat, adding a sense of tranquility to the surroundings. This serene setting also offers a great opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture some stunning shots.
The temple is nestled in magnificent surroundings. The most common way to reach the temple is by bicycle. Despite the heat in February, the journey to the temple is worth it. The temple itself is quite beautiful, but what sets it apart is its location near a picturesque lake.
The compound of the temple is quite large, with the main temple situated on a land surrounded by a moat. Opposite the main temple, on an island, is a hall. The lake, known as Silver Lake, enhances the beauty of the compound. The sitting Buddha and the lotus-bud style chedi add to the charm of the place.
The Wat is located at the edge of the Historical Park and is one of the few places where you can see a standing Buddha. Although it only takes a few seconds to see it, it's worth stopping by if you're in the area.
Inside the main complex, this temple may seem similar to others with its Buddha statues, pillars, and lack of a rooftop. However, it still holds its own charm and is interesting to explore for a few minutes.
The temple is smaller in scale compared to Wat Mahathat and is located in the central zone. It may not be as noteworthy, but it has a cute little standing figure wearing a cape, which is a bit different and adds a touch of uniqueness to the place.
When visiting Sukhothai, there are a few things to keep in mind. Sunscreen is essential as the sun can be quite harsh. Water is also a must-have, as there are few shops between the temples. It's advisable to visit early in the day to avoid the tourist buses, especially in the central zones. Hiring bikes is recommended as the distances can be quite large to cover on foot. And lastly, don't forget to bring your camera and an extra battery, as the picturesque surroundings will have you clicking away.
