About Wat Traphang Thong
In the heart of a serene lake, teeming with fish and even turtles, lies a tranquil haven. This place, best known for its silence, is a sight to behold, especially during the night when the moonlight dances on the water's surface. It's a place where one can truly relax and listen to the quiet whispers of nature.Every day, as the sun begins to peek over the horizon, monks make their early morning walk at 6.20. The sight of them moving in harmony with the dawn paints a beautiful and peaceful picture. The temple, nestled in this serene environment, takes on a different aura after dawn, its beauty magnified by the soft morning light.
This working temple, while not overly grand or ornate, holds a unique charm. One of the highlights of a visit here is the opportunity to feed the massive catfish that inhabit the moat surrounding the temple. This simple act of kindness towards these creatures adds a touch of warmth to the experience.
Unlike the other pagodas inside the historical park, this charming temple is situated on a cute little island and is in everyday use by locals. This makes it a lively counterpoint to the other more tourist-oriented sites, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people.
The temple is surrounded by water, creating a peaceful landscape that is both calming and captivating. The ancient pagoda still stands, and Buddha's footprint can be found in a small hall. Local people often come to this place to feed the fish in the lake, which are numerous and of considerable size.
Located outside the main Sukhothai historical Park, the temple is set against a tropical idyllic landscape of towering coconut trees, casuarina wooden huts, and a pond filled with fish. The many Loy Krathong festival decorated lanterns hanging on a bridge over the moat leading to the temple add a touch of color and festivity. Despite its small size and less grandeur compared to other temples in the historical park, it holds a unique charm. The temple is said to house the 'Buddha footprints', as indicated by a signboard.
Wat Tra Phang Thong may not be the most spectacular temple, but its unique location on an island and the fact that it can only be reached by crossing a bridge over the moat makes it a must-visit. The moat is filled with fish that visitors can feed for a few baht. The best part about this temple is that it has managed to retain its authenticity and is still free to visit, offering a unique and uncommercialized experience.
