About Wichai Prasit Fort
The Wichai Prasit Fort, also known as the Bangkok Fort, is one of the three fortresses that the younger generation has the opportunity to visit. Its original name was Wichai Yen Fort, constructed during the reign of King Narai of Ayutthaya. The fort was commanded and overseen by Chaophraya Wichayen (Constantine Phaulkon, a Greek national). The primary purpose of its construction was to defend against Dutch warships and to monitor potential threats from the river. The fort holds historical significance as it was during the reign of King Taksin that the royal palace was constructed in the area related to the Wichai Yen Fort. The fort was then renamed Wichai Prasit Fort. Today, the Wichai Prasit Fort is under the care of the Royal Thai Navy and serves as the firing ground for various important royal ceremonies.
Located along the Chao Phraya River, the fort can be seen up close from the opposite bank of the river. Although it is currently preserved as a historical site, it no longer serves any practical use. However, due to its location off the beaten tourist path, it can be challenging to visit on a tour. Despite this, the fort's historical significance and unique location make it a fascinating destination for those interested in Thai history and architecture.
